An "unauthorized test". This customer experimented without consulting Scanmar. He had friction in the main steering system and attempted to solve it by putting on a 2-foot safety tube "to get more power". He sailed from Seattle to San Francisco in strong winds - nothing broke. He was advised to change back to a standard safety tube, and he fixed his steering gear, removing the friction and resulting in far less strenuous hand-steering.
